Expanded newborn blood spot screening newsletter

The expanded newborn screening pilot is looking at whether blood spot screening can be extended to a further 5 very rare but very serious conditions.

Its May 2013 newsletter has just been published. It provides an update on the data collected by the project and the project that is investigating the best approach to and timing of communication with parents.

The new issue (January - February 2013) of the UK NSC's Screening Matters newsletter is now available online, with the latest screening policy information, as well as updates on the English national screening programmes and cross-programme work.

New Consultation on Screening for Spinal Muscular Atrophy

The UK National Screening Committee has started a consultation on the evidence of carrier screening for Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

This consultation runs until the 5th of August 2013.

The UK National Screening Committee has started a consultation on the evidence of screening for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease.

Recommendations on screening for SCID, Osteoporosis, Biliary Atresia, Canavan's disease, Familial Dysautonomia, Tay Sachs disease and TMS for SCD and Thalassaemia in Wales

At its meeting on 20 March 2013, the UK National Screening Committee recommended against introducing population-based screening programmes for the following conditions:

Severe Combined Immunodeficiency

Osteoporosis

Biliary Atresia

Canavan's disease

Familial Dysautonomia

Tay Sachs disease 

The draft minutes and briefing notes from the March UK NSC meeting are also available here.  

All the conditions will be reviewed again in 3 years or earlier if significant new evidence emerges before then.

The UK NSC also discussed the use, in Wales, of tandem mass spectrometry technology and agreed to the use of the new technology and testing protocols in the roll out of newborn screening for Sickle cell disease in Wales.

New report on prostate cancer screening

The UK NSC has updated its 2010 option appraisal on screening for prostate cancer to incorporate newly released data from the European Randomized Study of Screening for Prostate Cancer (ERSPC).

The UK National Screening Committee has started a consultation on the evidence for screening in old age to prevent hospitalisation and death.

This consultation runs until the 22nd of June 2013.
