Hearing (child)

The UK NSC policy on Hearing screening in children

More Information

Hearing should be tested at school entry.

» Read more about hearing impairment on NHS Choices

Policy Position

Following the introduction of newborn screening, most cases of hearing impairment will be identified before school entry, however there will be some cases that were missed or have developed after the test. The Child Health Sub-Group of the UK NSC made recommendations that screening for hearing loss in school age children should continue while further research was being undertaken.

This policy was reviewed in Jul 2006 but no significant changes were made. It is due to be considered again in 2013/14, or earlier if significant new evidence emerges.
