Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Screening in Scotland

All pregnant women in Scotland are offered screening for sickle cell and thalassaemia.

All newborn babies are offered screening for sickle cell.

The aims of the programme are:

• To support people to make informed choices during pregnancy and before they have a baby
• To identify babies with sickle cell disease promptly so they can get the care they need
• To provide high quality and accessible care throughout Scotland
• To promote understanding and awareness of sickle cell and thalassaemia
